Social media presentation inclusions

As a trainer I like to incorporate a rich multilevelled presentation that mixes the dry with the fun stuff.  I have found that presenting even the same information in a multitude of ways gets the ideas across quickly and offers varying perspectives.

These YouTube videos below brought life and interest to a long day of training.  As the organisation had a firewall that restricted direct access to the videos files, I first downloaded them from an external access point.  Luckily, I use a Mac so once downloaded it was very easy to embed them into my Powerpoint...this takes a little more effort for a PC though :)

What they do illustrate is that social media inclusions are possible into your normal work activities and can add additional colour.  So just in case your organisation's firewall causes problems, I have uploaded the file rather than just included a YouTube link.

Social Media and Healthcare: Good Medicine or Pretty Poison?

This article from MedCity News expands on some of our discussions on the problems and solutions to the use of social media in medicine.

Social Media and Healthcare: Good Medicine or Pretty Poison?
....Every organization, institution, business, or non-profit that employs or educates human beings should develop a dynamic social media policy. The policy serves to protect the institution itself as well as the associate or staff member. UTMB regularly reminds medical students and all associates of the importance of maintaining professional etiquette standards when using social media. In their newsletter, Impact Online, an article entitled, Getting in touch with social media, lays out some basic guidelines for social media engagement aimed primarily at medical students and residents.

Those who engage in social networking, blogging, or commenting on blogs should consider their posts and uploaded photos as having permanent Internet presence. Even when deleted by the owner, rest assured a version of the post, tweet, or photo exists somewhere....Read More

How to keep ahead of the crowd...

I found something that may help in the effort to generate relevant, variety and interest in your blog content.  I will be trying it out as well to see how useful it might be, but in the meantime, check it out if you can.

New Policies Help Students, Physicians Navigate World of Facebook, Twitter

AAMC Reporter: May 2011

—By Sarah Mann
According to a 2009 report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, in 2005 only 8 percent of U.S. adults ages 18 and older had used a social networking site. But by 2009, that figure had swelled to 46 percent. As of March 2010, 126 medical schools had a Facebook presence and 14 had Twitter accounts, according to a study in the September 15 issue of Medical Education Online. Those numbers continue to rise...[read more]

Speaking Up in Class, Silently, Using Social Media

Wasn’t it just the other day that teachers confiscated cellphones and principals warned about oversharing on MySpace?

This blog poses another view on the use of social media in a teaching environment...on the use of Twitter.

The argument made in this instance is that, contrary to my own behaviour, students are more comfortable writing comments and questions rather than speaking them.   I would prefer to engage in the idea that using social media avenues simply provides opportunity to participate for those people whose preferences are less verbal.

What do you think?

Plus I have added a new blog to follow in the Blog List - Wishful thinking in medical eduation.  I have turned up this blog in quite a few of my 'researching trips' and find her comments worthwhile...and would draw your attention to this post on her Twitter experiences.

Changing education paradigms

By engaging, or thinking about engaging, in the use of social media tools in education, are we engaging in a shift of educational paradigms?

The journey in searching out how best to utilise social media tools in medical education has provided an opportunity to think about some ideas way beyond the surface perspective.   You might also enjoy a journey beyond.

Gathering more...

The more you read and reach out to garner knowledge the more it comes to you...often in spades!  You can be distracted and find yourself in the position of decision - is this a diversion from my main purpose?  Social media has so many tendrils that I have found a constant need to evaluate the direction of new information and to keep assessing it against my initial premise...which implies, of course, that I have polished my purpose :)

This is probably the norm in researching new ideas and synthesising new knowledge but the potential of social media generates so many threads to follow - and to discard - and to imagine!  Don't be limited by a lack of imagination in how you can apply the potential utility of a social media tool in medical education.

The art of asking questions

To gain good information, to understand your audience's focus, to create good content, or simply to find out something interesting... from someone.  The art of this is all about asking questions.

This article, The art of powerful questions, provides a starting point.  For our session with the student panel I suggest that you have read of it beforehand.

Pitfalls and Benefits of using Social Media in business.

Hi Cheryl, I have been looking at the policy side of using Social Media tools in an Educational context, and thought the following maybe of interest to your group.

This article called When Legal and Social Media Programs Collide from a site titled Social Media Today, is an interesting article that summarises some of the pitfalls and benefits of organisations using social media to communicate with their clients. Its gives advice on areas organisations need to look at when development systems and processes for managing the social media activities of their organisation.

@JSNMA: Medical Tweets, is this our #future?

It is interesting where different links will take you. Consider doing a topic search in Google Blog search and see what comes up.... using the term 'Social media in medical education' brought up this tidbit.

@JSNMA: Medical Tweets, is this our #future?

The original example came via a CNN article Surgeons send 'tweets' from operating room - CNN
where a surgeon was tweeting during an operation to remove a cancerous tumor from a man's kidney.

Twitter use in medicine - from a Google Alert

You can find some interesting tidbits of information about the subject at hand.  In this instance, I have a Google Alert set up around 'social media in medical education' and this website from the Moore library, Uni of Virginia (All Atwitter About Social Media Uses in Medicine), was sent automatically to my email.

After having a look at the link, why not consider a topic of interest to you and set up your own Google Alert - http://www.google.com/alerts.  You may need to set up a Google Account first but that is free and you can have the emails re directed to your normal email account if you like ... or just keep it separate.

Policy policy policy on the use of social media

While there is an existing social media policy (see the Intranet, section 7), you may decide that more thought needs to be done in this area.  The course material does point to a governance website for some company examples but you might also be interested in reading the following 2010 article as its focus is in the medical environment.

Social media policies at US medical schools

Although not medical in nature, a very relevant blog post came to my attention via one of my LinkedIn groups - Intelligent Social Media.  It is from 'The Social Workplace' and gives advice on the elements of a social media policy.

Learning resources

The Flexible Learning website

Flexiblelearning.net.au gives practitioners in the VET sector access to resources, information and tools to allow them to network with colleagues who have similar interests.

This is an Australian based resource that aims to ensure the training sector has access to relevant information, people and resources that demonstrate leading-edge e-learning practices to support the training needs of individuals and enterprises.

While not specifically looking at a medical environment, you will find some solid basics to work with.

Facilitation online

One of the issues we need to be aware of when looking at using social media tools, is our skills as an online facilitator.  This resource from the University of Colorado, The CU Online Handbook, 2009, is a  handbook aimed at educators but has strategies that are relevant in online environments in general.

Article: Social Learning

This is a white paper from Enterprise Collaborative

It looks at the concept of Social Learning within an enterprise.

Welcome to the short course 'Expand your literacy about e-literacy'

Welcome everyone to the course being run at Peninsula Health.  I am sure that you will find it enjoyable ... at least I hope so as having fun is partly what this is all about ... of course there is a serious side too.

It will be a good idea to link all our blogs together so that we will be able to follow each other's thoughts and ideas as we progress over the next 4 weeks.  Remember that one of the benefits of setting up your own blog is that you will gain experience about how such a social media tool can be used and also keep all your ideas handy.

I will be posting interesting items here for extended reading or to provide additional background.  You are very welcome to contribute your own findings so that everyone can share the joy :)

Regards
Cheryl
